PRESENTATION OF THE GOLDEN JOHANN STRAUSS AWARD 2016

Heinz Zednik
On 18th October 2016 the Golden Johann Strauss Award was given to Heinz Zednik, a well-known Austrian tenor. In his keynote speech Prof. Peter Widholz, President of the Johann Strauss Society of Vienna, emphasized that Heinz Zednik has had a great international career as a member of the Vienna State Opera, but has at the same time remained firmly rooted in the musical tradition of his home town, Vienna. The opera singer also has an impressive repertoire outside the field of opera, with the main focus on operettas by Johann Strauss.
A great number of celebrities from the fields of art and culture came to the Marchfelderhof Restaurant in Deutsch-Wagram to congratulate the award winner, first and foremost Prof. Werner Resel, the former Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Renate Holm and Kurt Rydl as representatives of the Vienna State Opera, Kurt Schreibmayer, Gerhard Ernst and Guggi Löwinger from the Wiener Volksoper and Lotte Ledl from the Wiener Burgtheater. Edith Leyrer, Helga Conrads, Bärbel Holecek and Dr.Thomas Dänemark were also among the congratulators.


The festive event was framed by performances of the Classical Operetta Ensemble Vienna and the Wiener Picksiass Schrammeln. As a special homage to Heinz Zednik Peter Widholz sang a song from „ Der Rastelbinder“ by Franz Lehar, the lyrics of which he had rewritten and adapted to the award winner, “Er is‘ a Weanakind, so wia’s im Büchl steht!“ Heinz Zednik expressed his thanks not only in an acceptance speech, but also in a musical way by singing the Viennese song „Mein Herz, das ist ein Bilderbuch vom alten Wien“.
